The phones – Fiona’s mobile, the hotel landline – keep ringing. Ben (Joel Edgerton) is irritated by the fact that Fiona (Radha Mitchell) is taking work calls and further annoyed by her refusal to let him answer the landline. He leaves the room.
Curator’s notes
This scene shows the escalating tensions in the pair’s relationship. It establishes beyond any doubt Fiona’s control freak tendencies and there’s an element of absurdity in her attempts at juggling phone calls. While Ben is laidback (literally, if you look at his posture on the couch), he’s not so relaxed that he doesn’t mind being walked over. This willingness to stand up to Fiona foreshadows an important plot development.
