clip Placid breaks every bone

Original classification rating: M. This clip chosen to be PG

Clip description

Placid Lake (Ben Lee) wakes in hospital having broken ‘every bone in his body’. His best friend Gemma Taylor (Rose Byrne) curses the school bullies for their part in the incident but his parents, Sylvia (Miranda Richardson) and Doug (Garry McDonald), refuse to lay blame until the bandages are removed and Placid can tell them what happened. ‘Why couldn’t you just let it be?’ Gemma asks Placid once his parents leave.

Curator’s notes

Uncertainties cloud what happened on the roof in the first half of the film but this is the first turning point of the story because Placid’s extensive injuries make him realise he must change. As in the rest of the film, the tone in this scene is lighthearted, the bond between Placid and Gemma is strong, and Placid’s parents refuse to see evil.
