Curator’s notes

The celebrated and influential Indigenous artist Albert Namatjira (1902–1959) made his only feature film appearance in The Phantom Stockman. A Western Arrernte man from the McDonnell Ranges, Namatjira had been the subject of Lee Robinson’s 1947 documentary Namatjira the Painter. This sequence shows the rugged beauty of the Australian outback and features a young kangaroo – strong selling points in the film’s international marketing. Henry Murdoch, who plays the Sundowner’s partner Dancer, also appeared in The Overlanders (1946) and Bitter Springs (1950).
