Ort Flack (Jamie Croft) plays guitar while his mother, Alice (Lisa Harrow), and sister Tegwyn (Amanda Douge), hang out the washing. Ort’s father, Sam (Mark Fairall), says goodbye to his family and leaves for work.
Curator’s notes
A picture of family happiness. The old house, Alice’s hand-cranked washing machine and wooden clothes pegs evoke traditional outback life so cherished in the Australian imagination. The only scene featuring Sam prior to his terrible accident, it compactly sketches him as a loving father and husband who’s adored by Ort. The wide shot as Sam drives away is reminiscent of the rustic paintings by Australian artists such as Tom Roberts and Russell Drysdale.
