play
clip Guy hardly knows Lizzie

Original classification rating: M. This clip chosen to be PG

Clip description

Guy (Richard Roxburgh) tells several guests that he wanted to spend his life with Lizzie (Cate Blanchett) from the moment he saw her. Raoul (Jacek Koman) tells him Lizzie had always said she would be married at 30 years of age and asks how quickly they decided to marry after meeting. Six weeks, says Guy. ‘Well you can’t expect me to make a commitment like that to someone I knew,’ says Lizzie.

Curator’s notes

Guy is the central character in the film but is reactive rather than proactive. He rarely takes the lead and when he does it is often in a slightly cowardly manner. Despite this, Roxburgh manages to make Guy both an attractive character and an affable everyman. Blanchett’s timing is impeccable here, revealing the dilemma of their relationship in one apt sentence. Guy’s laugh gives way to doubt as he registers the full meaning of Lizzie’s words.
