Clip description
Guy (Richard Roxburgh) tells Jenny (Frances O’Connor) off for how badly she has set the table for dinner. His parents (Genevieve Mooy, Michael Ross) arrive and Jenny mischievously explains why each object in the big pile now on the table may be useful. The young couple get angry and each says they hate the other. The tension dissipates when they start laughing uncontrollably.
Curator’s notes
This sequence is an example of the excellent performances throughout. The tonal shift from annoyance to anger to bitterness to hilarity is handled extremely well by the actors. The sequence also illustrates how Jenny’s free spirit is both nerve-wracking and endearing. She adds greatly to the film’s appeal.
