China Jackson (Bryan Brown) stops a sit-down protest in the exercise yard, after prison officer Norton (Max Phipps) promises there will be no reprisals. In the middle of the night, his cellmate, old Bob (Syd Heylen), is dragged out and transferred to another prison, with several other inmates.
Curator’s notes
The film makes great use of low-level intimidation and violence, even in the way the actors speak to each other. There’s a constant sizing up, leading to moments of rebellion. These are averted several times throughout, until finally, there is no way to stop the big clash.
