Curator’s notes

Female empowerment is a strong theme in Shame. With Danny and his mates released on bail, Asta is certain that violence will erupt and confronts Lizzie with the brutal truth. The influence of classic westerns such as Shane (1953) is evident in this sequence. Like the gunfighter who wanders into a frightened town and inspires locals to fight back against their oppressors, Asta is preparing Lizzie, the Curtis family and the town’s female population for the ‘showdown’ ahead.
