Curator’s notes

The turning point in Shame. On the eve of her departure, Asta witnesses Lizzie’s distress and the appalling behaviour of her boyfriend and his mates. Her conscience compels her to stay and offer Lizzie comforting words that will help her find the courage to press charges and reclaim her shattered self-esteem. The powerful screen presence of Deborra-Lee Furness leaves no doubt in the audience’s mind that Danny, Andrew and their mates have a formidable opponent in Asta.
