Clip description

Tony (Richard Moir) greets his old friend Jerry Maguire (Chris Haywood), who arrives in a souped-up Holden Monaro. Jerry explains that he’s doing well in his criminal pursuits, due to a new philosophy – look out for number one.

Curator’s notes

A lovely cameo from Chris Haywood in this scene, as the kind of flash young thing wannabe. Richard Moir’s performance is equally interesting, for the mixture of warmth and derision with which he regards ‘old Jerry’. Prison has made Tony grow up, well beyond the childishness he sees in his old friend. We learn later that Jerry betrayed him to the police, and that Tony spent six years dreaming of revenge. A key dramatic turning point comes when he has a chance to kill Jerry, but doesn’t take it. This theme of personal growth is one of the film’s main preoccupations.
