Clip description
Delilah (Marissa Gibson) nurses Samson (Rowan McNamara) back to health. She bathes him in the water trough, gives him fresh clothes to wear and makes him a meal. As Samson sits in the wheelchair listening to music on the radio, Delilah spreads out the canvas and begins to paint.
Curator’s notes
Through love Samson and Delilah begin to build a new life for themselves. In this clip the lyrics of the song 'All I Have to Offer You is Me’ express the sentiment and harsh reality of their new life together, and provide closure to their story. The radio plays Charlie Pride singing:
Before you take another step, there’s something you should know
about the years ahead and how they’ll be.
You’ll be living in a world where roses hardly ever grow,
‘cause all I have to offer you is me.
While this final scene provides a sense of hope, it avoids a 'happy ending’ that would be unrealistic for this particular film. At this point, Rowan McNamara and Marissa Gibson have infused their characters with a sense of wisdom beyond their years, and an optimism that transcends the film and hopes for the healing of all Indigenous people. Having survived their ordeal, Samson and Delilah will learn to take care of each other and live a life of mutual understanding. They can finally smile.
