Clip description

Gordon (Peter Fenton) and Cynthia (Sacha Horler) get acquainted after she has phoned him and asked him to come to her place. He arrives with beer and they get drunk. Next day he sees how bad her eczema is and she hears how bad his asthma is. She gives him a pill to help with the hangover.

Curator’s notes

The film is awash with substance abuse and we get a sense of that here. The tone is slightly comic, like much of the film, but the sense of damage is real enough. There’s a desire for self-obliteration in both characters, which may be part of the attraction. She has called him on the eve of going to live in Darwin with her parents, with whom she’s trying to patch up a difficult relationship. We never see the parents, and she abandons the move to Darwin at the first encouragement from him. Perhaps that is why she called him in the first place.
