Clip description

Missing girl Leilani (Amanda Berry) tells her new friend Zane (David Lourie) that she knows someone who wants to buy his supply of LSD. Unemployed Paul (Bryan Brown) decides to rob a supermarket, but ends up shooting a cop. Private detective Larry (John Flaus) is still looking for Leilani.

Curator’s notes

Very immediate and expressive camerawork as Bryan Brown approaches the robbery. Sequence has restless energy, building to the shooting, followed by a kind of 'exhaling’ scene, to relax the tension, with Flaus on the beach.

The audio at the beginning carries on from an earlier scene where a group of women are talking about the injustice of surfing competitions in which women get less prize money. There’s a tenuous link in that idea to the horse race, then the 'race’ by Paul, as he flees the robbery (all are concerned with winning a sort of 'prize’). When Flaus looks through binoculars at the end, it’s almost a visual joke – like he’s at the racetrack.
