Clip description
Dorothy (Joy Dunstan) and the surfie (Bruce Spence) stop for petrol, where a truculent mechanic (Michael Carman) ignores them — until he gets a look at Dorothy.
Curator’s notes
The film has a kind of slow, meandering humour, playing with stereotypes about Australia. Dorothy isn’t exactly innocent, but she’s inexperienced, unaware of what lies outside her world. The surfie doesn’t really care, and the mechanic only wants what he can get right now. Underneath it all, the film presents young people who want more from life, but have little idea how to get it.
