Jack (Alex O’Loughlin) returns to his shack on the river to find Pearl (Diana Glenn) there, hoping for a lift up the river. He asks her about a man called Slug, with whom she argued at the pub. Jack does not know that Slug is her father. Jack and Pearl are very attracted to each other, but unsure how to proceed. Their first kiss ends in a bloody nose.
Curator’s notes
Reeves is careful in early scenes not to overplay the comedy. It’s usually there but buried in the dialogue. This scene makes the romance and the comedy more concrete, but it’s immediately interrupted by his bloody nose, adding tension to the romance. At the same time, the scene is very revealing about each one’s character – Pearl’s obsession with shoes; Jack’s overly hot temper.
