Clip description

Bung (John Hargreaves), a soldier from another patrol, comes looking for his stolen pack. Harry (Graham Kennedy) extorts a beer payment for his help, but Bung announces he is to join their patrol, after the death of one of their comrades.

Curator’s notes

Good example of the film’s sharp-edged humour, and its exuberant ensemble cast. The theft of the pack leads to the cheerful theft of Bung’s beer – but emotions change when Bung announces that he’s now in their unit: you don’t steal from mates.

The sense of masculinity is interesting too – Bung is taunted for his clothes, for being a dandy, but we see later that he is a fearless and effective soldier. His death, towards the end, becomes the film’s muted climax.
