clip A disturbing dream

Original classification rating: M. This clip chosen to be PG

Clip description

Linda Stevens (Jacki Kerin) dreams of her childhood. Aged four, Linda (Kristine Marshall) wanders through the deserted hallways of Montclare.

Curator’s notes

This is a stylish dream sequence. Linda is unnerved by passages in her mother’s diary and the sudden appearance and disappearance of a figure in the grounds of Montclare. Her dream hints strongly at a disturbing event from her childhood and furthers the idea that some sort of family curse is at work. The sequence is notable for the use of ‘dolly in and zoom out’ technique to create a distorted perspective of the hallway.

Young Linda recalls the girl who tormented Toby Dammit (Terence Stamp) with a bouncing ball in Federico Fellini’s 'Toby Dammit’ segment of the Edgar Allan Poe trilogy Spirits of the Dead (1968). Fellini was adapting the Poe tale 'Never Bet the Devil Your Head’ (1841).
