Clip description
The night after they slept together without having sex, Eddie (Ben Mendelsohn) talks to barmaid Kay (Belinda McClory) in the pub. He did not want to complicate his relationship with the woman who serves him drinks; she took it as an insult. He reassures her that he thought their sleeping in the same bed was a good thing. Their talk is interrupted by the arrival of Robbie (Peta Brady), Eddie’s sister. At home, Tully (Susie Porter) sings quietly to herself as Pete (Andrew S Gilbert) prepares to go to work.
Curator’s notes
The film has a lot of these unexpected small epiphanies and moments of intimacy. Even though the characters often have trouble expressing themselves, they sometimes say the right thing, as in the pub, where Eddie senses how vulnerable Kay has become. And sometimes they have no way of saying anything at all, beyond words like ‘You alright?’ Pete knows there is something terrible threatening his marriage, but he can’t bring himself to discuss it, or even acknowledge its presence. Nor can he interpret the signs that Tully is giving him in the words of her song.
