Clip description

Eddie Maloney (Ben Mendelsohn) hitches a ride back home to Coollawarra, his home town, as his brother Pete (Andrew S Gilbert) negotiates his way out of some free fish. At home, Pete’s wife Tully (Susie Porter) reiterates her opposition to having kids, even though she works at a preschool.

Curator’s notes

Caesar gives us a vivid and funny introduction to life in Coollawarra – feral pig shooters, friendly fishermen, football fanatics and brick and fibro houses, in a picturesque locale. At various moments in the film, and quite naturally, most of the major characters have a song to sing – usually in a moment of reverie. These are often popular Australian hits of the 1970s and ‘80s, but each tells us something of what the character is thinking. Eddie, for instance, is thinking about Tully, the girl he walked out on three years earlier. He doesn’t know she has married his brother Pete.
