Joanna (Anna Ralph) follows Manganinnie (Mawuyul Yanthalawuy) into the forest. Anna’s father, Edward Waterman (Phillip Hinton), calls out to her in vain.
Curator’s notes
Although they cannot understand each other apart from a few words, Joanna and Manganinnie are drawn together. Joanna is captivated by Manganinnie’s fire stick and follows her into the bush. This scene combines beauty and tension. A child has gone missing in circumstances which could be interpreted as kidnapping but there is no sense of Manganinnie posing a threat to the girl.
