O’Connor and Mitchell bring a touching tenderness to this scene. It’s not hard to see why the film helped lead to successful international careers for both of them.
A moment of tranquillity in a generally frantic narrative, the scene represents a dramatic turning point, and like much of the rest of the film, makes its points with economy. The way Mia and Danni talk about Danni as ‘her’, as if she were another person, is a particularly fresh device. It enables the troubled lovers to say what they’d find much harder to admit more directly.
