Clip description
Alice (Alice Garner) unloads to her counsellor.
Curator’s notes
The witty intertitle at the start of the scene is one of many strewn through the film. This and the use of jump-cuts display the influence of the French nouvelle vague (and director Jean-Luc Godard) and help give the scene a brisk and frothy flavour.
A more conventionally written scene would have interspersed Alice’s neurotic monologue with comments (or at least reaction shots) from her counsellor. The fact the viewer doesn’t even see the counsellor emphasises Alice’s self-obsession.
