Clip description

Nikki (Frances O’Connor) and Al (Matt Day) are driving across the desert in a four-wheel drive they’ve stolen, having just driven away from a petrol station where Al pulled a knife on a truck driver who’d earlier tried to force them off the road. Nikki is shocked by Al’s behaviour, especially his wielding of a knife she had not seen before. When asked about it, Al says he’d snatched it up at the petrol station. He asks her about a second sleepwalking incident at the motel the previous night that she doesn’t recall. Nikki tells him she doesn’t trust him – she doesn’t know who he is. Clearly he has doubts about her too. She hugs him and tells him they have to stick together, but the look on her face as she steals a glance at him indicates her uncertainty about him.

Curator’s notes

This critical scene clearly lays out the film’s central theme about the difficulty of trust and of truly knowing a person who’s meant to be close.
