clip Without me you wouldn’t have jobs

Original classification rating: MA. This clip chosen to be PG

Clip description

Greg (Vince Colosimo) responds angrily after Hakim (Robert Rabiah) accuses him of underpaying his workers. He points out forcefully that if it wasn’t for him they wouldn’t have jobs.

Curator’s notes

On one level a classic example of an employer’s self-righteousness, the logic of Greg’s outburst is also hard to argue with. Had he not founded the business his employees would not have their jobs.

This clip illustrates a basic principle of mature, complex drama – everyone has their reasons, a much-quoted line from Jean Renoir’s film, Rules of the Game ( La Regle du Jeu, 1939). This principle runs throughout the film: no one is a villain, no one the hero.

In addition the sequence showcases powerhouse acting from Colosimo. It’s one thing for an actor to shout; it’s another for them to lose themselves so thoroughly in the moment.
