Clip description
Barky (Marty Denniss) goes to see his former girlfriend Lanny (Leah Vandenberg) at the bookshop where she works. She asks him about his brother Wace. Barky is upset when she says that his failure to talk to his brother is symptomatic of his inability to talk to her.
Curator’s notes
There’s a big difference in Barky’s communication skills in this scene, compared to the earlier scenes in the pub. He’s more relaxed and articulate with Lanny, even though she quickly reaches the limits of his willingness to talk. She makes it clear that their relationship can’t be restarted until he can overcome some of his reluctance to communicate emotionally – with her, or with his brother. He doesn’t like hearing that withholding has its price – the opposite of what his brother has told him (see clip two).
