Clip description
Wace (Hugh Jackman) and his brother Barky (Mary Denniss) argue about their mother and father, while playing darts with Trunny (Aaron Blabey) and Coppa (Andrew Wholley) at the King’s Hotel. Wace lectures his little brother about the virtues of keeping feelings locked up inside, and the shortcomings of their mother. Barky has less enthusiasm for his father, who used to beat him savagely.
Curator’s notes
Wace is the dominant, and domineering, character in the movie, and Jackman’s performance gives the film a large part of its impact. Jackman was known largely for musical theatre before this role demonstrated his quite extraordinary range.
