Clip description
Colin Rogers (John Hargreaves), his wife Kate (Robyn Nevin) and Colin’s writing partner, Mike McCord (Chris Haywood), are lamenting the ratings failure of Mike and Colin’s TV mini-series. Colin remembers Mike’s girlfriend, Helen Davey (Nicole Kidman), from a party.
Curator’s notes
The ‘Sydney effect’ is taking its toll on Colin. Money and success are the driving forces of the city, unlike Melbourne where artistic merit is more highly valued. The differences between the cities are personified by the women in this sequence. Kate is an intellectual who does not care about TV ratings or other so-called measures of commercial success. Helen is presented as a superficial and frivolous type who longs only for money and glamour. The interior monologues of the characters adds another dimension to the drama. We can hear exactly what’s really going on inside everyone’s minds.
