Curator’s notes

The early segments of Emerald City are primarily focused on the differences between Melbourne and Sydney. From her office with magnificent harbour views, Elaine explains the ‘facts of life’ in Sydney. Kate represents the Melbourne intellectual set which dismisses Sydney as superficial and soulless.

The second part of this sequence was filmed at the State Theatre in Sydney (built in 1929 and home to the Sydney Film Festival). Attending his first industry event in Sydney, Colin expresses serious doubt about his decision to relocate from Melbourne.
