Clip description

Barry (Bryan Brown) shows his nephew Darcy (Sam Worthington) the counting house where the poker machine takings are processed. ‘Hollywood’ Riley (William McInnes) explains how they drain the machines of cash every night, limiting the possible payout to a few coins for the pensioners.

Curator’s notes

Dirty Deeds is very much influenced by the slick, violent and fast-moving crime drama style developed by Martin Scorsese in Goodfellas and Casino, and Quentin Tarantino in Pulp Fiction, but Caesar has attempted to adapt it to an Australian vernacular – hence the use of Australianisms in language, the look of old cop shows, and iconic foods such as lamingtons. The concentration on poker machines is also culturally relevant, given the disproportionate numbers of machines in NSW, compared with almost anywhere else in the world.
