Anya is an astute judge of character. She can see Danny’s many shortcomings and hang-ups even without looking at his palm. Passive in any situation, Danny takes the harsh truth in his stride. Lobby groups campaigning against smoking in movies would be alarmed by this film in general and this scene in particular, which uses smoke as a metaphor for smouldering attraction between the characters.
