Misty (Lee Cormie) overhears Fearless (Sullivan Stapleton) tell Father Scully (Frank Gallacher) that he and Teresa are still having difficulty starting a family. Father Scully points out that the December Boys are desperate to be part of a family. A seed is sown.

This scene is a turning point in the story because Fearless is prompted to think about adoption and Misty becomes hopeful that the holiday at the beach will end with him fulfilling his dream to be part of a family. Misty’s decision not to tell the other December Boys of this conversation immediately changes his relationship with them.
