Prosecutor Captain Cooper (Bryan Brown) and accused Vice-Admiral Baron Takahashi (George Takei) clash in court. Takahashi claims his subordinate, Captain Ikeuchi (Tetsu Watanabe), was the officer in charge of Japanese troops on Ambon. Takahashi also claims to know nothing about the events that led to a mass grave filled with the corpses of Allied servicemen.
Curator’s notes
This fiery, dramatic scene makes it clear that Cooper is up against seemingly insuperable odds and that this will be a tough court battle. Faced with Takahashi’s indignant denials, the best evidence Cooper can produce is hearsay which is clearly inadequate. Note the controlled intensity of the performances of Brown and Takei.
