clip Four overboard

Original classification rating: MA. This clip chosen to be PG

Clip description

Something rams into the dinghy and all four occupants are thrown into the water. Jim (Ben Oxenbould) disappears; the others panic. Adam (Andy Rodoreda) is shouting about a crocodile and tells Grace (Diana Glenn) to climb a nearby tree. She is screaming for Lee (Maeve Dermody). Adam again orders Grace out of the water, promising to find Lee, and half pushes her up the tree. Meanwhile, Lee is tangled up in some rope under the upturned boat. Grace glimpses a crocodile and begs Adam to get out of the water too.

Curator’s notes

A lot happens in this action sequence but each shot is strikingly simple: a sodden Adam thrashing around in waist-deep water, kicking legs under the surface of the water filmed from a crocodile’s perspective, and so on. It is the cumulative effect of the editing, the soundtrack and the acting that carries the power. Then all is quiet except for the sound of heavy breathing. Lee, after several attempts, has managed to clamber onto the unstable boat but she is in a very precarious position and the stillness allows her terror to fill the frame.
