clip Roly ‘visits’ Honolulu

Original classification rating: M. This clip chosen to be PG

Clip description

Nurse Ophelia Cox (Gosia Dobrowolska) discovers Wally (Philip Quast) and Eddie (Kelly Dingwall) have created a fake Honolulu for their father, Roly (Allan Penney). Ophelia threatens to tell Roly but Wally convinces her to join the hoodwink.

Curator’s notes

Wally’s quick-talking ways succeed in convincing Ophelia to participate in the audacious plan. He remembers Ophelia telling her snooty fiancé Dr Proctor that she wanted to do field work, and here in the shape of Roly is her perfect test subject. Crucial to making audiences believe in the set-up is the use of camera lenses representing Roly’s eyesight. The distorted point-of-view images firmly establish Roly can see just enough to be convinced he’s in Honolulu but not enough to spot the finer details, such as his son Wally dressed up as a Hula girl.
