Clip description
A smoke bomb is detonated at the Martin Place Cenotaph in Sydney on Anzac Day. In a train station photo booth, perpetrator Ray Unit (Michael Callaghan) describes the act.
Curator’s notes
Ray’s act of terrorism takes place on Anzac Day, a remembrance of sacrifice in war that many people regard as Australia’s most important day of national identity and unity. Director Tim Burns shows images of other conflicts, most importantly the war in Vietnam, which caused considerable social and political friction during the period Australian troops were involved. Ray’s apparent confession in the photo booth is intriguing. Does he know he is being recorded by authorities? Is it a fantasy sequence? Or is he only talking to us, the audience?
