Clip description

George (George Wallace) conducts the house band in a comic routine, but he has great trouble controlling the bass drummer.

Curator’s notes

Wallace was an accomplished musician, writing many of the songs he performed, but this routine is pure slapstick, taking advantage of the relatively new ability to record sound on film. Wallace’s moustache suggests the routine is something of a tribute to Charles Chaplin, one of his major influences, although it could just as easily be Stan Laurel, whose hairstyle was very similar.
