Clip description

This clip describes the history of the Terezin concentration camp, or Theresienstadt as the Germans called it, and what might have happened to the internees. There is a map of Theresienstadt that shows the location of the large and small fortresses. Narration tells of the Australian army’s denial that Australian soldiers were imprisoned there. Walter Steilberg and Alex McClelland travel to Czechoslovakia to revisit the concentration camp.

Curator’s notes

En route to the camp, an emotional Walter Steilberg muses to his wife, ‘I wonder if they’ll mind if I don’t go in’. Knowing some of what Steilberg had gone through, there is a very moving scene of him and his wife walking into the fortress which then dissolves into a black-and-white historical photo of internees at the very same gate.
