Clip description

This clip views the Melbourne suburb of Footscray from an elevated position. The camera pans clockwise to record a panoramic view of the buildings, streets, landmarks and layout of the area as it was in December 1910.

Curator’s notes

This clip is from the opening minutes of the film (the title of which is taken from the introductory title card). At a time when the moving image was still relatively novel, the recording of daily life (actuality footage) was a popular way to attract audiences to local picture shows. Audiences watching this clip at the neighbourhood Federal Hall may have been acquainted with the suburb’s layout, but possibly not from the bird’s eye view taken by the camera.
