‘Our defining experience’

This clip chosen to be PG

Clip description

Introductory images of beaches are complemented by music and a voice-over (by David Wenham) contemplating why the beach is so important to Australians.

Curator’s notes

These first three minutes of the film encapsulate the filmmaker’s approach to the subject. The film opens with filmed beach images, Peter Sculthorpe’s beachscape-inspired music score and a painting by Charles Meere. Other paintings are interspersed throughout the clip. The voice-over asks what attracts ‘the most beach-conscious nation on Earth’ to the beach. Several possible answers are proposed, including suggestions by writer Tim Winton.
