Clip description

Time is running out for the organisation of the youth conference, to be held in Campsie, in Sydney, on 25 November (2006). There’s a lot to do and tempers are fraying over workloads and designation of jobs.

Curator’s notes

Fadi conceived the idea for a youth conference only eight weeks prior to the date it was to be held. It’s a very ambitious proposal and at this point in the film preparation time was running out. Fadi, Ibrahim, Zouhour, Alyah and Amna, all ICRA volunteers, meet about the conference organisation. The three women have a list of contacts and responsibilities to take care of. Earlier in the film Alyah has alluded to the fact that Fadi calls the three the ‘brains’ of ICRA. These women handle much of ICRA’s administrative work, letters and phone calls. All three are high achievers, and the work involved in staging the youth conference has put additional strain on their already very busy lives. It’s a common story today. Those doing well are inevitably time-poor, and committing to volunteer work is, if not impossible, very stressful. As a result, those doing less well – who have traditionally benefited from the work of volunteers – are the ones who are paying the price.
