Clip description
A family prepares for the start of the day. While the woman (Florence McCracken) makes breakfast, her husband (Eddie Allison) shaves in the bathroom. He comes to the kitchen for breakfast and his wife seats their young son at the table. The man leaves to catch a train to work, while the woman does the laundry at home.
As she is washing, there is a knock at the door. It is the estate agent who comes to collect the rent. After he has taken the woman’s payment, he hands her an ominous letter.
Curator’s notes
This sequence effectively uses editing and repetition of images to create empathy and build the case for rent relief. By showing the everyday situations that the family experience – eating, washing, going to work – the viewer becomes invested in their story.
The actress in this clip was a member of Sydney’s politically engaged New Theatre. The filmmakers had links with the New Theatre, as did many of the other actors who appear in Take Notice.
