Footage of a group of bikers riding and interviews with Sandy Harbutt in 1998 and 1973 are intercut with black-and-white and colour footage. Harbutt explains how he was able to get the numbers of bikies for the funeral scene in Stone (1974) and how the film came about.
Curator’s notes
In 1998, over 30,000 bikers assembled in Sydney to celebrate the anniversary of the release of Stone (1974) and re-enact the funeral scene. No doubt this was the filmmaker’s impetus to make Stone Forever. Kuipers would have had access to all the footage from the The Making of Stone (directed by Brian Trenchard-Smith) which is in black-and-white and Stone (1974), which is in colour. A viewer quickly comes to know where the footage derives from. At times there is narration from the ‘making of’ black-and-white film (made in 1972) which gives information about what is going on. Today, it sounds quite odd because of its ‘voice of god’ delivery which is not used much any more in documentary filmmaking.
