Curator’s notes
The figure that looms largest in Not Quite Hollywood is Antony I Ginnane. The most prolific producer of Australian exploitation films, with credits including Patrick (1978), Thirst (1979), Harlequin (1980) and Turkey Shoot (1982), Ginnane is described by director Richard Franklin (Patrick) as ‘Australia’s Roger Corman’, a reference to the acknowledged master of American ‘B’ movies. One of the most appealing aspects of Not Quite Hollywood is its sense of humour and candour. Sharply divided opinions on Ginnane and his films are edited in a highly entertaining fashion that is in keeping with the ‘you’ve gotta tell ‘em to sell ‘em’ spirit of exploitation cinema.
