Clip description

Gary Foley talks about white control of the Black movement accompanied by images of the Sydney Black Moratorium march to the Sydney Town Hall on 14 July 1972.

Curator’s notes

This pivotal scene occurs when a middle-aged white woman visiting the Tent Embassy attempts to give the central protagonist, Gary Foley, advice. Gary Foley responds by outlining to the woman the need for Aboriginal people to take control of the Aboriginal movement. The role of non-Aboriginal people in the Aboriginal struggle still remains as hotly contested a subject today as it was in 1972. This dialogue accompanies historically important footage of people taking part in a Black movement protest march to the Town Hall in Sydney in 1972.
