Curator’s notes
The director Tracey Moffatt positions her subjects before a camera in a studio, their voices are out of sync with their lips which at first is disorienting. This is a stylistic choice made by the director to disconnect the seeing and listening senses. The effect is to enhance each sense by forcing the audience to more actively engage than if the sound and vision were synchronised.
