Clip description
Spike Milligan explains the challenges of bringing up three children on his own after his first wife left him. His daughter recalls how many of her father’s playful children’s stories (such as Bad Jelly the Witch) had their genesis in bedtime tales he told them. A montage of home movie footage showing the children’s toys and playthings is followed by black-and-white photographs of Milligan with his children, accompanied by reflections from both Milligan and his daughter about children and childhood.
Curator’s notes
Milligan was a prolific writer and penned 83 books, many of which were for children.
