Clip description

Rupert Kathner (Ben Mendelsohn) announces his filmmaking vision: a projector atop the tallest city building screening his movies on white clouds in the sky, the entire world his audience.

Curator’s notes

This intro to the film sets up Hunt Angels so an audience will know that this is Rupert Kathner’s story and also what the style of the film will be. It is an unusual film with many digital composited scenes and shots and this clip gives a good indication of what an audience has in store.

The compositing technique was innovative for an Australian film. The crew shot a large number of 35mm stills on green screen so, for instance, an image of ‘Rupert’ could be put in as one of the characters in the photo. They had to carefully match the lighting and the position of the character in frame during the shoot.

The interviews at the end of the clip – using actors – give an idea of how people who knew Kathner felt about him and, together with the music used, create a real tension that plays out in the film.
