Cable trams in Melbourne

Clip description

This clip features Melbourne’s cable trams in operation in the city’s CBD in the mid-1930s. It captures the experience of riding in a cable tram through shots from inside the cabin, as well as point-of-view shots from on board. Passengers and conductors are filmed in the tram’s cabin. The clip also features other modes of transport (including buses, cars, electric trams and a motorcycle) which share the road with the cable trams.

Curator’s notes

This vivid historical footage captures Melbourne at a time when standard electric trams, powered by an overhead cable, were replacing the cable trams which had been in operation since 1885. Only five years after this film was recorded, the last cable tram ran through Melbourne.
