'500 dollars just goes nowhere'

Original classification rating: not rated. This clip chosen to be G

Clip description

Sitting out the front of the Collingwood Community School, amongst some of the students who are gathered around him, a staff member talks to camera about the limited resources the school has to work with. With only minor support from the Department of Education, he wants to approach the Innovations Committee and Disadvantaged Schools Commission for assistance. To illustrate, he gives an example in which the $500 income the school receives each year barely covers utilities let alone a much needed bus for excursions and daytrips.

As he is interviewed, the camera captures the students sitting around, reading, smoking and talking in the background.

Curator’s notes

By conducting the interview outside and framing some of the students in the background, Zubrycki provides both a visual texture more complex and informative than just a talking head, and subtly reinforces the students’ presence.
