Touring car champion

Clip description

Engine trouble with Beechey’s car leads to the hard decision not to race in the final of the championship. As Beechey looks on from the sidelines, the final race at Symmons Plains is run on a wet track damp with rain. Another member of the Shell team wins the race and this gives Shell a one, two and three placing in the overall championship. As Beechey congratulates his teammate in a mixture of emotions, his genuine display of sportsmanship reveals the sign of a true champion.

Curator’s notes

In what could have been an anticlimactic end to the narrative of Beechey winning his final Australian Touring Car Championship the narration frames Beechey as a true champion, continuing the story of the true Australian success story.

Beechey’s bright yellow Holden Monaro HT GTS 350, especially designed and constructed with the support of both Holden and Shell, was the first Australian car to win the Australian Touring Car Championship (ATCC). In this clip, we see the car up close in the workshop when it is out of action.
